In terms of technical profiency: Wynton Marsalis, Allen Vizzutti, Sergei Nakariakov, or Rafael Mendez
In terms of popularity: Louis Armstrong, Harry James, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Doc Severinsen, Herb Alpert, Chris Botti
In terms of advancement of music: Miles Davis, Dave Douglas?
Anyway, it's preferential, but I'll put my overall vote in for Maynard, who Bud Herseth (another one of the greatest trumpet players of all time) called the greatest brass musician of the 20th century and who recently passed away.

DOC hands down. Two of the trumpet players in my band played with him as guests and they were ripped, like a whole new world. I met him also as I was all the percussion.
