The origin of rap music could arguably be traced as far As the late 1920's to a song called "The Dirty Dozens" by Speckled Red.
The "dozens" was a type of verbal dueling found among both blacks and whites but now associated mostly with blacks,.Pointed insults, frequently in rhymed couplet form, are exchanged. This battle of words usually took place in front of an audience, indeed, may of the put-downs are aimed at getting a reaction from those in the audience. Frequently the insults were sexual in nature. and uncensored "dirty dozen" songs could be easily considered obscene in nature..
Just goes to show, there's really nothing new under the sun.
P.S. The 1968 song "Here Comes The Judge" by Pigmeat Markham (also by Shorty Long) could also be passed off as a rap if it were recorded today.
