Shunsuke Watanabe was on the Japan national team with currently Red Sox pitcher, Dice-K. Shunsuke was closer for Japan national team as won the close game over Cuba in the World Baseball Classic last year. He uses two-seam Gyroball which is close to Dice-K.

I've only seen him pitch an inning or two at the WBC last March, so I can't give an honest assessment. I know his pitching style is really unique, but that by itself doesn't really mean anything. Based on his stats, I'd say he could be a decent end of the rotation or "flex" guy in MLB. But, I'd be concerned about his age. He's almost 31, and history shows Japanese pitchers tend to burn out in their early 30's.

I don't think he'd be a star by any means

He is 31 years old and past the time he should be looking for a new career in MLB. He just signed a new one year contract and I believe he will finish out a good career in Japan.

Maybe he has already been approached, doesn't want to leave Japan. Maybe he has a contract that doesn't allow him to go to a MLB team.
