I'm thinking on buying a laptop. I'm in Highschool and i love watching movies and listening to music on my friends laptops. so i would like one with those capabilities. But i'm trying to stay under $1,000. What would you suggest as a good lap top for me? O also I'm kind of stuck on Microsoft so no Mac for me. Allso a nice size screen would be nice.

to buy anything else besides mac is to buy a substandard computer - I'd suggest you look at mac a little more before you say no. You can run Windows on it as well, if you so desire *shudder*.

You did say that you did not want a mac, so I'd go with a laptop with a large hard drive, to store video and music, as you say that is your main want. Unless you want to play a lot of graphic intensive games games, you don't necessarily need a graphics processor/card.

With the main processor, go Intel-core Duo. They work really well. You'll need, at most, 2.0 ghz.

Get at least 1GB of RAM -you'll want it. There's no need to suffer with a slow laptop for 4+years. If you are getting Vista (OS X is better, but this aside belongs in the above rant, I apologize for my deviation) then you'll want 2GB of RAM.

I'd recommend an HP or Toshiba, not a Dell or an Acer.

The following should be good:
Toshiba, 14.1" screen - http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-Satellite-14-1-rdquo-Widescreen-Notebook-PC-M205-S3217/sem/rpsm/oid/185945/rp
Extreemly nice HP, 15.4"

I think this is the best one for you: huge Hard Drive (250 GB) 2 GB RAM. It is an AMD processor, which is a downside, but it keeps the price lower. It has ATI Radeon® X1200 graphics and 319MB of shared video memory—drawn from system memory.

I myself use HP and have been very happy with them, my son is in the IT field and says the best laptop for the money is an Acer. You can find them for under 600 at Wal mart

You are not gaming, so i would go with an HP, Dells give you more to workwith and are bigger. And a bit pricey.
