My mother and her parents lived in Latvia until the early 80's, when they moved to Canada. At the time, Latvia was part of the socialist Soviet Union, and Canada was, as it is now, a mixed economy. Being as anti-Communist as they are, they vastly preferred Canada. They did not appreciate having to stand in line at the store just to get some margarine in Latvia.

I'm not sure what it's like in the Soviet Union, but it has to be better than it was under Communism. What I can attest to is how Russian women are faring here in the United States. My background is Russian -- both parents were born in the Ukraine. Some organizations I belong to have made it possible for a number of Russian families to come and live in the United States. They have been furnished housing and received help with becoming citizens and learning how to read and write English so they could get good jobs. And their children have become outstanding students by attending the schools here in our country. Russian politics being as unstable as they are, does not bode well for the people in the Soviet Union. However, under the former Communist regime, they were very much suppressed and were not able to exercise creativity or special skills for their own benefit or gain. Everything they did was for the government. So I would say yes, they are better off under a democracy such as ours, politics not withstanding.

From what I have read, nobody is better off in Russia at the moment. This is because of the dramatic shift in social structure caused by such an extreme switch in economic policy. Immediately after the fall of communism, people had no idea what to do...it was a very difficult and confusing situation. There were people so poverty stricken, that cannibalism was happening; people were abandoning their children, and life was generally very unpleasant for most going through this major change. My understanding is that things are getting better, but there is still a great deal of poverty in Russia. Ultimately, I think anyone is better off under a capitalist structure, but the transition from communism to capitalism has to be difficult, as they are so different. Things will improve for people there, but it will take time.

The Communism that Karl Marx and Trotsky had expected in no way got here to fruition, as one individual pronounced, the Human Greed aspects in. as long as people choose yet another ones backyard or backyard, Utopia will in no way exist. i think of that propaganda, under any guise, remains propaganda. Peoples have been extra specific of stability under Communism, this is a sturdy subject. Peoples have been uncertain if an casual assertion could desire to be pronounced as sedition and then all is misplaced. I honestly have an outdated e book right here in my room, it became written via a Russian that became in Russia in the process the White/crimson opposition and lived onto see Germany invade his us of a. between the statements interior the e book , revealed interior the U. S. , 1942, became "supply a Soviet a heat lover, a chilly bottle of vodka and a tractor and he's a satisfied guy." That assertion runs actual for in basic terms approximately each society, supply a individual a place to stay, the liberty to love, and the foundation to paintings and that they are going to be satisfied. yet then greed or envy rears its gruesome head and the society collapses back into i choose extra, and extra, and extra stunning little filled pandas to placed on the cabinets i visit construct at some point. i can verify how some human beings did get excitement from the certainty that the State is the human beings and the each person is The State. unique Communism became a Democratic concept of sturdy for all, no longer many, no longer a choose few, each Citizen gets the comparable as another one. A Classless Society with a purpose of peace and assisting others is a Utopian dream, in spite of the undeniable fact that it became very practically placed into action in those Republics of the U.S.. i'm a Socialist and that i think that each and one and all peoples have specific rights that are to be pronounced and respected. life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness. long simply by fact the Elected government officers get Cradle to the Grave wealth, care and risk-free practices, then each Citizen could have those comparable luxuries as rights. i'm currentky dropping the homestead that my Granparents offered, built and paid for to taxation from Federal,State,County and city ordinances. some thing is quite incorrect with this photograph. So specific, i can understand the risk-free practices of residing a life that a majority of those former Communust electorate pass over and long to have decrease back to them.

Anything is better than life under communism especially for women. Communism prevented men and women from receiving basic human rights and being treated with dignity.

I don't know, but I personally believe yes, and no. With Communism, "equal share for everyone." In capitalism, "Make your own money, beggar!" So, no, women are not better under capitalism.

Well said TEELEECEE. That sums it up perfectly.

The only russian women I know, maybe about 30 or so, are all sex workers, and have told me they had no choice. It was either that, or starve.
