OK when they hit the campaign trail while they already hold a public office. Are these people still pulling a salary even though they're traveling around for months gathering votes?

In theory, they are supposed to show up for work, but there is nothing holding them to it, but their responsibility to the voters. Our U.S. Senators and Representatives have managed to schedule business so that there is plenty of time for them to duck out for a day or so to hit the campaign trail and then head back to D.C. for an important vote or committee meeting. So the reality is that they can campaign for re-election while taking a salary from the federal government.

To counter this unfair advantage, the FEC (Federal Elections Commission) has issued rules that allow a candidate for Congress or Senate to take a salary from their campaign funds. This salary must be no more that what the candidate earned the previous year if they worked a REAL job. This allows a candidate to campaign and pay their own personal bills. Thus, someone running for office these days doesn't necessarily have to be filthy rich, but it still helps.

Robert, my man
you can bet your sweet tailfeathers they get their regular money -- and find ways to "pad" the accounts OF their offices with some of the expenses incured while "out on the campaign trail" -- they do this by little "side junkets" that relate in some way to legislation that they are involved with within the context OF their offices !! Kinda like the dudes that go on vacations and take a good deal of THAT expense as a "business write-off" by making a little "side trip go-sees" that relate (no matter how trivially) to their business !!!

Rather invest while campaigning as they know they or their parties can recover all expenses once in power!
