I was looking at a 2002 Nissan Altima.I fell in love with this car. But I realized it may not be the best choice considering I may be driving this much. Basically I'm looking for something within the price range of 5,000-7,000 that is not a Honda civic and is fairly modern (Ex/ 2000 Jetta, 2001 Honda Civic, 2002 Nissan)

If you can find a 2002 Nissan Altima for less than $7,000.00 I am willing to bet that it will have a ton of miles on it. I know that it is a Nissan and Nissan carry a good track record as far as dependability. I would consider a 2003 or 2004 Dodge Neon. Most cases the newer the car, the lower the miles and 2003 and 2004 Dodge Neon's carried a 7 year 70,000 mile power-train warranty. So to make a long story short, consumer reports recommend the 2003-2005 Dodge Neon as a best buy. You should be able to find them with miles in the 35-45k range for under $7,000 and still have warranty coverage up 70,000 miles. Be sure to check and make sure the car is a 1 owner vehicle because the Power train warranty can only be transferred once. On top of a great warranty and great price you also get great fuel economy, around 33 miles to the gallon on the highway and mid 20's in the city. I hope that this helps. Adub.

I would recommend brand new Nissan Versa twice as much as you wanted to spend out of pocket actually probably less a month if you put 5,000 down payment year end sales dealer incentives check out new car's first then decide if you look good in a 6 year old altima. Honda FIT, Toyota Yarus, Suzuki Aveio Or Nissan Sentra. Reliability factory warranty ability to finance for more years. And you look Marvelous! Successful! when you drive newer cars. Your driving much? No driving a lot some of my customers drive 120 miles each way to work.

I'd go with a Volkswagen Jetta with the 1.9L Turbo Diesel Engine. Diesel engines can take a lot more abuse than gasoline engines, so they'll last you longer. You won't be driving extremely far so mileage isn't real huge, but at the EPA 2008 real world estimates, it gets 29 city and 40 hwy. Pretty decent. The diesel is gonna be a bit more expensive than the gasoline version, so not sure what year you can find in your price range.

I don't agree with the first answer - go with you instinct and get the Nissan - i don't know about the jetta but my observations of both the Honda's and Nissan's are both reliable vehicles. good luck

well for 5-7k, you're not going to get anything foreign and modern without extremely high miles. maybe check a mazda protege, chevy malibu. i have a toyota camry and love it, but it may be a bit more car than you really need. corrollas are also really good cars but toyotas and hondas have high resale value, so buying used isn't going to come cheap without high miles.. i prefer toyota over any other brand i test drove. good luck. i wouldn't get a jetta, they have a lot of issues.happy car hunting.
