just eject it hrough the pc or itunes.
if you pull it physically a problem will occur .if that happens then perform this
press both the center and menu buttons together for 6 seconds.it will reset.the songs will not be deleted
if that doesn't help connect it back to the pc and open itunes(version 7 or later and go to ipod section and press restore.it will restore it to factory settings and all data will be deleted) or (version 6 or less ) go to ipod directory in the hard drive where you installed the ipod and search for an icon saying ipod updater or sumthing.it will restore it

Mine used to do that when I had a PC and used Windows. I have a Mac and use Tiger now, and I haven't had that happen since. Anyway, I always disconnected it. As long as the new music or files are already synced, it shouldn't harm it. I used to think it was supposed to say "Do not disconnect" all the time, because I never saw it not do that; so no, it isn't just you.
I noticed on the Mac, the icon that usually pops up with external "parts" (like a game DVD, the iPod when its connected, etc.), disappears after the syncing/transfer is over. Maybe your computer thinks that it still has to transfer information to the iPod.

Yes this has happened to me before aswell. Your best bet is to turn off your computer so that you definitely know that nothing is being transferred to your iPod. Then if the 'Do not disconnect' screen is still being displayed hold down the Menu and Center buttons together until the iPod resets itself. This is perfectly safe to do and will not erase any of your songs.
To ensure that this doesn't happen you should either Eject the iPod from iTunes or use the Safely Remove Hardware feature which is located in the taskbar.

Once an iPod is connected to the computer, the screen will display "Do not disconnect". You must not disconnect it as it is scanning inside your iPod what to be changed or to be added. It is on the way accessing what is inside the iTunes to be downloaded into your iPod. This warning may consume a bit of time depending what is inside your iTunes that has to be changed when loading it to your iPod. After the loading finished, it will display "OK to disconnect". This time you will disconnect it by right clicking the icon of your iPod over the iTunes. Then click the removable icon on the task bar of your computer. A pop up window will display which to disconnect either USB removable disc or Apple "iPod". Click the Apple "iPod" and click OK. That completes the disconnection of your iPod and you will not have problems or troubles to face regarding the iPod.
*I can see lot of people here using iPods have problems/troubles, but I think its because they are not following the right instruction on how to handle it esp on connection and disconnection.
**If you can stay a long time to be here in Y/A, I think you can spend just minutes to wait for your iPod to display when to disconnect. That is the way to handle and have care of your iPod.

you mean this happen after you click "safely remove it from PC", rite? (I assume you know how to do it) You may try to reinstall itunes because the driver is not working properly. If you disconnect it before the PC says "it is safe to remove it now", there might be little chance tat the data or program of yr ipod will be damaged. It may eventually cause it to "freeze" or not functioning properly.
(If you dunno wht is "Safely remove", read below)
Make sure you know how to "safely remove it" by clicking the little "green arrow" on the task bar(bottom right corner) & detach it after the PC tells you tat "you can safely remove it" & the "Do not disconnect" disappear. If you dun click tat green arrow, you're not supposed to disconnect it & the "Do not disconnect" will appear forever until you shut yr PC down.

well it tells you that becuase its charging and transfering music and other. but i would not reccomend doing this for the following reasons
1. your i pod can loose all the songs you have and you'll have to put it agian
2. your i pod can probably freeze
3. you might damage the usb cable and need to buy a new one.
its not safe ok
hope i helped
