I have a 2002 hyundai elantra, whenever I got oil changed I noticed level was way way high on the dipstick, so I started doing it myself. I noticed that at about 1 qt. below the amount it says in book (4.5 qt i believe) the dipstick is at the full mark. I am on level ground and waiting awhile before adding it again, and I am changing the filter. What could possibly cause this? Should I go by the dipstick or book??? Anyone else have this car?

When you add the recommended amount of oil do you start the engine, let it run for a minute, cut it off and wait a minute before re-checking.

Check the owner manual i doubt that little engine takes 4.5 qts. And if the dip stick is original "hyundai" us the dip stick as the measuring tool. To much oil splashes on the crankshaft and foams up resulting in less gas mileage and other problems. Cause too much oil... Corection read the owners hand book and fill oil to proper level on the dip stick.

the owner's manual isnt always right if its reading too full then it probably is a little car like a hyundai shouldnt take more than 4 qt so stop when you get 4 qt in that will be enuff

First verify that you have the correct dipstick. If not then replace it.

Second verify that ALL oil is being drained. Let the car stand for an hour before draining the oil.

Finally Examine the oil pan. Is it dented? If do replace it.

depending on the brand some filters hold less than others..i would only add 4qts with a filter change then start, let in run a miniute to check for leaks... shut it off and wait a couple minutes then add to just under the full mark... better to be just under full than overfull.

on no account herd of this one earlier, nonetheless right here is going, are you loosing water from the header tank, (coolant tank)? have you ever checked the oil filer cap for white sludge it extremely is coursed via short journeys petrol and diesel engines. and can path a scent as nicely as an better oil point interior the sump. while you're loosing water from the header tank this could be head gasket, in case you have a white sludge interior the proper of the engine, then replace the oil and clear out, and a minimum of as quickly as a week take the motor vehicle for a stable run no longer had to thrash it yet a stable lengthy run of a minimum of 50 mile to maintain the engine sparkling from the sludge.

Run the engine & allow the oil filter to fill, then recheck the level.

US quarts or Imperial quarts? They are different. Go by the dip stick.
