I got married in January and havent made it to the SS office and DMV to change my name. My husband and I are getting a joint checking account. Can I have my married name on the account even though my social still says my maiden name?

I agree with both of you. However I will be the one in charge of the money as it is not important to him. And we have agreed that should we beging to argue (which we never do) then we will go back to our own accounts.

i don't recommend a joint checking account. my husband and i have been married 17 years, and have never fought over money, mostly due to the fact we don't share an account. we divided the bills, he pays the mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities. i pay our car payment, car insurance, food, clothing, household goods, phones, cable. we divide major purchases like rennovations, furniture and appliances and repairs.

i'm not sure they'll allow a name change on account without some proof though, if you go through with it.

You shouldn't have any trouble with that. Just bring your marraige licence with you.

In response to the 2nd poster's answer...there are different opinons on if married couples should have joint accounts or not. I don't agree with her. When you get married, you are joined as one, and should work together financially. When we got married, we started out with joint accounts, but we ended up being much better off with joint accounts. It was at that time when we truly started working towards the same financial goals.

There are a lot of opinions on this, and since you are newly married, I recommend you take a look at a book by Dave Ramsey called Financial Peace. He talks about budgets and how to handle money. It's a good thing to go through with your husband. It forces some conversations to make sure you are on the same page.

The number 1 cause of divorce is money issues, so it's important to have these discussions early.

Good luck!

Bring your marriage license and you should be able to open the joint account with your married name.

I strongly recommend that you get your SS name change taken care of. End of year tax time will be here before you know it and I'm sure you plan on filing a joint tax return.
