the windows firewall is a perfectly adequate firewall,ok it only monitors incoming traffic.however you should know what you are sending out
i have used the windows firewall since windows service pack 2 was brought out and have never had any problems,as long as you keep a check on your "exceptions" and dont let too many through you should be fine
every time you allow a firewall exception its like sticking a pin through your firewall, too many holes and the firewall(and your p.c) become a threat from port scanners used by hackers
these are scanners that trawl the internet for inadeqautely defended firewalls, and as the name implies,it scans for unsecure or open ports in your firewall, and if succesful can take complete control of your p.c
cyber criminals are using this security flaw to turn unsecure computers into "zombie" computers, these are p.c,s that have been taken over, however not to a extent that you would notice, however when the criminals have enough of these so called "zombie p.c,s" they use thousands of them to bring down a corporate server or something similar and then hold the company to ransom
the criminals are hard to catch as they are using other users p.c,s to carry out the crime, however with good p.c security you can defend against this happening to yours
i use avast anti-virus,spybot ,adaware, spyware blaster and windows defender, and of course the windows firewall, this is adequate defense against all of todays threats, and its also important to keep these programs up to date so as to keep up with the latest threats
finally if you have to use a 3rd party firewall use PC Tools Firewall Plus™ 2.0 for Windows® from http://www.pctools.com/firewall/,this is a free firewall buts not as intrusive as the other free ones like zone-alarm and comodo
i hope this helps
good luck friend!

The reason window firewall is not that good is that it only monitors incoming traffic. I have used Comodo in the past and found it to be very effective. I personally recommend Comodo.

Are you referring to the free or paid version of ZoneAlarm firewall. Unfortunately, tests have shown that the free edition of ZoneAlarm firewall is barebones and substantially not as effective as the paid version. Either way, I would go with Comodo Firewall Pro.
Both Comodo and ZoneAlarm require a lot of computer knowledge. Both firewalls will prompt a user to either allow or deny a connection. In other words, the firewalls are as good as the decision making of the user. That said, a study was conducted recently which showed that the free Comodo Firewall Pro was superior to the paid ZoneAlarm Firewall Pro. In addition, PC Magazine did a review of Comodo Firewall and almost gave it a perfect score. Please refer to the following articles:
1. "Free firewalls outclass paid-for ones, test reveals" -- ArNnet (http://www.arnnet.com.au/index.php/id;159719021;fp;8;fpid;0)
2. "Comodo Personal Firewall 2.0" -- PC Magazine (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1969207,00.asp)
"The only two products to achieve a rating of "excellent" turned out to be free-to-use software, the Comodo Personal Firewall v2.3, and the Jetico Personal Firewall v2.0 beta. They scored, respectively, 9,350 and 9,125 points out of a possible total of 9,625, leaving the nearest rivals some way behind....In third and fourth place were ZoneAlarm Pro 6.5, Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007, and both of which are charged for and achieved a "very good" rating." -- ARNnet
"Comodo Personal Firewall is a kick-*** free firewall. It keeps hackers out and tricky unauthorized programs off the Internet. And it resists being terminated. It works as well as all but the best for-pay firewalls—and did I mention it's free?" -- PC Magazine

i've got Comodo. It's very effective I think, and it looks good considering it's free. Also, you can keep Windows Firewall on, while using Comodo as well. That means you get double protection innit!

My firewall is by pc tools and its great and free and defo not complicated like some, or you could try freeware on google/live.com and look under security on each respective site. Would not pick one that is above you if there is a lot to configure which other ppl here maybe do not seem to telling you, just get a simple one that does just what it says on the timn lol, hope you find a good one.
