Hello. The current greatest empire I know of,and for all the wrong reasons,is all of the European Union member states. With no recourse to the people it serves, this rotten-to-the-core, unwanted, unwarranted and despicable Empire rules from Belgium. All the satellite states, including the United Kingdom, now have to kow-tow down towards it and its over-bearing,interfering and total infringement of its peoples rights and principles and their respective governments. If allowed to go unchecked, this ever-expanding, corrupt and politically inept Empire and all those who serve it,will eventually run everything and ruin everything in every country that its grubby arm reaches out to on a daily basis. In my lifetime, our once great and mighty Parliament has been reduced to nothing more than a local Council office whose bosses run it from a foreign land. The sooner all nations' citizens get a right to vote, the sooner this dictatorial organisation can be got rid of once and for all for all our sakes.

Unfortunately most countries these days are not large enough to grow by themselves. Historically this was a force for economic unity to make the passing of trade between member nations easier, so the best Companies could expand there products and services. With the decline of manufacturing to the power bases of the east, the idea still has merit. Finally with a shift to knowledge base and the Internet explosion, it still has a sensible role to play. What needs to happen is a shake down of bureaucracy and make sure every penny going to Brussels returns value to the UK.

The problem is caused by continued corruption within our own Parliament.
Whoever gets elected, wants to hang on to as much gravy as they can.
Where someone who has managed to become a Prime Minister can look forward to a pension of UK£ one million and, presumably other hangers on get proportional amounts - they merely look round for something to do that will justify their salaries and existence.
The European Union exists for the same reason - our members of Parliament loose their seat and get moved on to either the House of Lords or the European Union.
They are not going to vote it down and possibly loose their next job.

How comes only british complain about this?
Only a small percentage of national laws are based on EU laws, I'd say less than 5 %.And tell me, how did the EU interfere with your rights?
I am convinced that the UK has more advantages than disadvantages from being in the EU.Given that the EU countries are the most important trade partner of the UK, there'd be a serious economical impact if the UK opted out (it can do that, just convince your parliament that you want out).
The EU does help a lot, people just don't see it.For example :
I studied two semesters abroad. The paperwork was very simple, since it was part of the EU Erasmus program.I met students from Non-Eu countries who had to go through lot more red tape than me.I also got 600 Euro from the Erasmus budget to support during that year.
In general : If you stay in the UK, never travel abroad and take no interest in the economy (name one major enterprise that opposes the EU) you might get to the conclusion that the EU is useless.Otherwise, you will see its benefits.

Yes as EU competence increases, so the ability of member states to propose their own laws for their own people shrinks until it is extinguished. That is the ultimate goal of the ever-closer union: but it entails a stark and anti-democratic removal of sovereignty from this area which impacts directly on our most basic freedoms and liberties.
The political nature of the E.U.—which was sold to the British public as a strictly limited commercial undertaking—raises important questions about the long-term stability of this new political entity. The EU is a corrupt, undemocratic, unaccountable gravy train...

I agree to a point. However we have to remember that the UK opted in, also by the majority constantly voting for Labour we have no way out. I believe the UK independence party want out as do a certain amount of citizens. However the UK needs to be a very working part of Europe but as you say where our laws are ruled by the EU it is not acceptable. All I can say is keep using your vote and campaigning.

SPOT ON. Lets put our membership to the vote now, and start saving billions of pounds to spend in our own country. Possibly on flood defences for a start.

I've been saying much the same on these pages for some time now. I agree with everything you say. The E.U. Commissioners are corrupt, incompetant and totally self-serving.
