If you have a newer laptop (Intel-based), then you can use its internal accelerometer (used to protect the Hard Drive in case of a fall) as a kind of input device. A few people have mastered this, and made some code. This code is called macsaber, and it turns your mac into a light saber, that makes saber sounds when you swing it around. Get it; all your nerd freinds will be envious. - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21732
On a more serious note, there are three really nice programs that I use alot:
Seashore - a free GIMP editor (like paint on windows, but far more features) - http://seashore.sourceforge.net/
Joost - stream high-quality video to your mac, free. Legally, too. - http://www.joost.com/
Quicksilver -see site for description, very useful - http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/
