if you ordered 'Volvic" in an American restaurant it means the water has taken a ship to get to you and thatt leaves a carbon footprint to big just for a glass of water.
I guess they have a point, would you order tapwater in a restaurant for the sake of being greener ?
Do you care that you beer flew from Japan on a freight plane just to get to your table.?

If you watched the news the other night all three "major" bottled water companies admitted their water is nothing but filtered tap water. Why not get screwed by beer too?

A growing trend in Napa Valley is to get away from bottled water. Because those bottles have to be recycled or end up in a dump. So the restaurants are putting in huge filtration systems with reverse osmosis. So it is tap water, just expensively filtered. Just like bottled water, but with no plastic to dispose of.

As for the beer analogy, there will always be a need for shipping. Hopefully shipping will become greener in the future.

Honestly, no one should expect the consumer to change their lifestyle when the businesses provide the product whether you buy it or not. However, if everyone stopped drinking bottled water, they would probably drink something else, and most likely not tap water. It is more logical to put restrictions on the manufacturers of planes to make more environmentally friendly engines or designs. In this case, you won't have to feel guilty about drinking bottled water, but the price of bottled water will increase.

It is your decision if you want to drink bottled water or not, but the effect on the environment for better or worse will be minimal. The best way to be environmentally friendly, is to buy an alternative fuel vehicle, and use alternative or "Green Power" at your home. Don't let someone tell you that by not drinking bottled water you will save the planet. That just isn't true.

This is, however a good way of showing businesses that consumers are concerned about the process of transportation and the impact it has on the environment. If enough people stop drinking bottled water, the hope is that the businesses will do something to lower the amount of resources used and polution added to the atmosphere in transporting their goods.

I for one will drink bottled water because the tap water in my area stinks and tastes like metal pipes. And I can afford to buy bottled water. I will also buy and drink LOTS of bottled water while I am on my roof installing my new solar panels. I will be happy to know I am doing my part for the environment while not forcing myself to brave the local tap water.

As a master plumber (NYC) I have written many articles about "bottled water" and some of my articles were written in 1970's long before it became a fad.

There is NO FEDERAL regulations as far as bottled water is concerned and if you happen to live in NYC you happen to have one of the best tasting water supply in the country.

You are much better off using a point of use filter if your so concerned about the quality of water and the fluorides and chlorine they put in the water.

Filtering a whole house is really crazy as 60% goes down the toilet or used for gardening .

If we had beer coming out of our taps, I'm sure we'ld all drink it and never buy a Saparo again.
