I don't know about Dems but I'm a Republican and I think there are 5 sub-groups within.

1) Normal, just down home, traditional blue collar people
2) People who are 50/50 but the Republican side means more to them
3) Crazy religious types
4) Bushies (I'm with the libs on this one, these people are blind as bats)
5) CEOs

I didn't include rednecks because the difference between blue collar and redneck is that blue collar votes, rednecks 9/10 of the time, don't... though that may change if Obama wins Dem primaries.

Number 5 is a collective of CEOs and other highly paid executive people.

I would add one more group.

6. Small business owners.

The fact is I believe both parties are made up of very diverse groups which can not be easily generalized.

There are many subcategories in each party but I think the Pew Research Study grouped people generally fairly well by political outlooks.

Republican subgroup:
1. Stockholders, big business hotshots, or super rich
2. Thse who hate blacks or other minorities
3. Those who hate gays and think abortion is the worst
crime of humanity.
4. Those who want to appear rich and seem to belong to the
country club crowd
5. Those who think tax cuts will apply to them even if they are
lower income
6. Religious fanatics who are fixated on "adultery"
7. People who have a disdain for all the poor.

Democratic subcategories:
1. Those who know that Republicans truly love war for whatever reason.
2. Those who'd like to see USA remain among the ranks of Canada and Europe and not become more like a 3rd world country.
3. Those who think progressively in terms of women's rights, freedom of expression, freedom to pursue happiness, freedom in general.
4. Those who care a lot about the environment, but aren't ready to throw away their vote to a spoiler candidate.
5. Those who would like to see the separation of church and state.
6. Those who would rather see our taxes go to help people than to waste it all on bombs and war.

BUT: The "crazy leftists, communists, socialists, etc." mentioned above usually don't vote Democrat. They tend to see Dems and Reps as all the same and they vote for other parties. I don't know any Dems who are "communist or socialist" a la Soviet Union, Cuba, or Venezuela. Those are just brainwashing scare tactics of right wingers.
