According to Wikipedia, Reagan's administration had been worried about Grenada before because they were building up their army and an airport in league with the other socialist nations of the Caribbean. The coup and the American students made a convenient excuse for them to get a more friendly government in power. Nothing new for America. We've intervened in loads of countries' governments. Look at Iran- we got the Shah back into power even though he was hated by almost everyone and later, when he was deposed again, a whole bunch of Americans suffered for it. The American government has never learned their lesson and probably never will. On the other hand, October 26 is now Thanksgiving day in Grenada in gratitude for our invasion.

Ostensibly to protect the U.S. students attending medical school in Grenada.

The real reason: The government of Grenada was collaborating with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was building a huge airbase there that would have accommodated their heavy bombers. Doing so would, had the situation arisen, would have allowed the Soviet Union to unleash nuclear bombers on the U.S.A. and strike the U.S. by air almost at leisure.

They were communists and Reagan was preventing that area from becoming a red lake. I read The Reagan Diaries in which he could say anything he wanted, even if it was top secret, because it would be released after his death, and he said he would take care of any country that was becoming communist and who he viewed as a threat to America. Most of the time, he was correct.
