It depends on what you really mean by inexpensive. Initially inexpensive is quite different from total cost of ownership over your expected period of ownership. After spending a great deal of time evaluating the numbers, I concluded that total cost of ownership must be the criteria. As a consequence of their superior reliability, Hondas and Toyotas jump to the head of the line. Interestingly, buying them new actually makes the most sense as well.
In 2005 I purchased a basic model, new 2005 Honda Odyssey Minivan for my family of six and am still convinced I made the best choice. We plan on keeping it for at least 10 years. Annual repair costs have been zero so far and are expected to remain quite low. In addition, Hondas historically retain a great deal of resale value, so expected depreciation over 10 years should be minimized. My only problems with this van are that it actually has too much horsepower and the resulting gas mileage is below what it could have been with a more modest engine.
We bought the Honda to replace a 1995 Ford Windstar that I had bought new in 1995. Although that van ran great for 10 years and the only major repair expenses I had with it were several expensive air conditioning problems, the collective dreadful experiences of other Windstar owners resulted in the resale value being very low, about $3000. I really liked the Windstar until the air took a dump (Ford 'Black Death') and would have cost $2000 to repair. The total cost of ownership for the Windstar for 10 years was actually more in constant dollars than what I am expecting from the Honda, but I won't know for sure for another 8 years.
