It depends on what carburetor you are planing on installing, as stated above 2bbl and 4bbl carbs wont interchange. however there are 2 types of 4bbl carbs too, there are square bore and spread bore. (there are adapters for this though) you will also want to check your clearances butterflies, fuel lines etc. When in doubt talk to your local parts guy (just as long as it isn't Schuck's or similar) hope this helps you out.

Well if you are using a 2 barrel carb for examle you would have to use another 2 barrel carb on your present manifold. carbs are build to different CFM ratings Cubic Feet per minute. So if you had a 750CFM you could use an 850 CFM if you had the carb jetted correctly for your 318. If you buy a Holley 4 barrel yes you will need another intake manifold and gasket set for it. If you do this you will need a torque wrench and the specs to torque it to. Be sure to work in a pattern from the center of the manifold to the outer edges. If you tourque it from the outside edges toward the center it will never seal correctly. Experience is a great teacher

If you change the carburetor, you do not have to change the intake manifold if you re-install the same kind of carburetor. However, it is good practice to replace the manifold gasket to insure against any vacuume leaks. When tightening the hold down nuts on the carburetor flange, be sure to observe any torque maximums from the manufacturer. Lots of carburetors have very limited access to the flange nuts, and sometimes require a special wrench. Do not overtighten, especially with a new intake manifold gasket. Use sequential cris-cross tightening of carb. flange nuts to insure an equal and uniform squeeze on the carb. to intake manifoild gasket.

No, you can purchase an aluminium adapter plate. Decide if you want a 2 or 4V carb. Some plates allow for Carter, Holley, Ford, Rochester, ect., interchanges.
