This is debatable because there is not a year zero. If we accept this the start of the 20th century was 1st Janusry 1901 and the 21st century on 1st January 2001
However popular opinion is that the first year of each century was 1900 and 2000 and all official deocuments will have that date. It is a case of dust baffles brains

Since the year 1900 was still part of the 19th century, the 20th century began January 1, 1901

At the beginning of 1901. Or if you prefer, at the end of 1900.
It's easy to work out - the first year AD was year 1, and that was therefore the beginning of the 1st century. So just add 19 centuries - easy.

Think of it this way, you had 2 B.C. 1 B.C. NO 0, 1 A.D. 2 A.D.
So, if the first century A.D. began with year 1 A.D. then the 20th century began with year 1901, not 1900.
That's pretty much common sense.

1901 because there was never a year zero so the first and subsequent centuries start with a 1 and end with a 100 ie 1901 - 2000
