I am studying for a HR Degree, and I am looking at best practice methods of communication as my management report.

If you are able, please let me know where you work also so that I can reference! (if you are happy for me to!)

Face-to-face conversation is always best. It's not always practical, though, especially when the person you are communicating with is not available, or when you have a message for a large number of people.

Phone conversations are useful, but email has superseded many phone conversations as people adapt to it. Briefings and presentations are also necessary and important means of communication. Reports also get passed both up and down the chain of command, informing management of what's going on in one area on the way up, and informing an entire organization of important events on the way back down.

Documentation and work products are also means of useful communication, although most people usually don't think of them that way.

Even the lowly bulletin board is often useful as a means of communication, although email has also taken over many of the traditional roles of bulletin boards.

After nearly 40 years in various industries, I am convinced that the most reliable means of communication is the 'grapevine'; but that is most definitely not the answer required for HR purposes.

This form of communication revealed the truth with greater reliability than any of the methods which are appropriate for your formal answer, and occasionally as much as two years sooner.

well as i work with 1500 people, a lot is done by email, but as we all know it's never guaranteed to get read. if it's informal and not to important then email is fine, if it's important or needs to be addressed immediately then face to face.
