I have been given a Packard Bell and have tried connecting it to my Advent using USB connections (not sure if I amusing the correct ports but other items have just plugged in and worked) and I am struggling as I have no CD for the PB. Can anyone help as I would like to use the floppy drive to get my work onto CD's.

Hi,
If you just want to transfer some files use a "Pen Drive" to transfer the files between the different systems. Hope this helps you.

Usb to usb wont work as the output pins are the same, you need a cross over lead to change the input to the output and vise versa.
Pc world does a network card for about 7 pounds and you will need a router and ethernet leads, or you can get a complete kit.
Probably the best bet is to remove the drives and memory cards and build one better computer rather than having to fire up 2 computers each time when you can only use one.

the quickest way would be to take the hard drive out of the older machine and make it a slave drive, just copy the files across. (if its a lot)

or if both pc's have a network connection, you can use a cross over cable..

or perhaps spend £10 on a usb pen drive.. copy the files onto that and pop that into the other pc..

www.ebuyer.com for cheap pen drives.

there is a usb transfer cable you can buy.. also of ebuyer, but that comes with software.. i've seen
"USB SuperLink File Sharing Software" mentioned a few places.

as for drivers etc for the PB.. look on the makers site, they will have them there. you just give them the model number.

If both of the computers have a NIC (Network Interface Card) port, you can purchase a 'cross-over' cable. Any computer shop should be able to provide you with one. Do make sure it's a cross-over cable though as a straight connection will not work in this way.

You need to enable file sharing on your computers too.

Come to think of it, you should be able to do this with USB too.

To enable file sharing, double-click on My Computer and then right click on whichever drive(s) you wish to share with the other computer. You will need to do this on both computers if you wish to transfer files back and forth.

Alternatively, if you intend keeping the computers connected together you might consider purchasing a network hub and a couple of network (RJ45) cables which connect between the respective computer and the network hub. This way they will both be able to share your internet connection at the same time. (These cables will be straight cables or patch cables.)
