I have decided to build a new computer but being on a limited budget i don't want to spend more than i have to at first. I wanted to get a crossfire motherboard but only buy one graphics card, buying a second card when i had some more money. Having looked on a few websites i can't find any information on whether the computer would work with just the one card, i assume it will but want to be sure before i buy. Can anyone help?

yes it will work with just one card. if the card is lower then the x1950 however you will need to make sure it is the master card that you bought.

Yes, it will work with one graphics card.

When you come to purchase a second card, though, it must have the same GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that the original one has ... or you need to buy two graphics cards that have the same GPU.
