I am a person who traveled to america after being born in a different country. I was brought to america at a young age and i was raised here. My family came here not only for a better living but for better opportunities. My parents would not have been able to feed me in my country where the pay rate is lower then anyway can imagine. I work a part time job that I make 9.50 an hour. My cousin who works something similar in a different country makes about 16 dollars a day. Except he is not part time. He works about 8 hour days sometimes longer. Also in america everyone has the opportunity for an education. While in some countries as long as you can afford to pay you will get educated. In america the only people that dont survive are the ones that dont try to get ahead.

Yes, immigration was forced for blacks in the old days, just as it was in most other countries around the world.
What makes the USA unique (and better) is that The United States took a stand before just about any other country in the world to end slavery. This sends a message to the world that justice, if it will prevail anywhere, will prevail in The United States of America before anywhere else.

So we have a past, that's called evolution. The difference is we are trying to learn from old mistakes and the Arab and African and Asian nations still have child slavery!!! And as for being poor in the US as compared to other countries, (windbagmamma) talk to people in third world nations... our prisons are more habitable than their living conditions. Fresh hot meals, clean bedding and facilities, cable tv, money when you work and leave. Where is your source of knowledge coming from?

there is a big difference between traveling somewhere on your own free will... and being brought in the bottom of a ship..with hunger..disease... and death. being forced to wallow in your own body waste..and vomit. and then of course once you arrive... you are shackled with chains . whipped and forced to do the labor of people too lazy or weak to do it themselves. native americans are indians.. so unless that is your claim to fame... your ancestors chased a dream like everybody else. i know alot of people in the 60's that fled america..and not because of the war.. but because of a search for better treatment. they went to canada... or back to their original homelands.. do not get me wrong.. i love the united states of america..with all my heart... but we have a past..like every other country. no country is perfect. but with that said, this is the best game in town... so i am sure... that is why a lot of folks come here. the freedom of speech.... and all that other good stuff.

i think that there are opportunities here that don't exist elsewhere. america still has the reputation of having streets paved with gold.
i agree with the other poster, that i wouldn't want to be poor here. but i think the poor here are probably better off than in most countries.

I agree with the first answerer. The main reason why people come to the US is our high standard of living. Not only does the US provide the greatest opportunities, it is also better to be poor in the US, than in any other country in the world.

If you assume that we arnen't talking about improving the level, or standard, of living, there is nothing to talk about. I live here because of the standard of living. Why do you live here?

Whoopi Goldberg is said to be originating from guinea - Bissau - a small west african country - formerly portuguese territory.I wonder if she is happy her ancestors got shipped to the cotton fields or sad about that fact. Considering her considerable wealth today.
