Okay I think what I am growing is zuchinni. It is green when it is small and it is slender. When it gets larger it gets more of a pear shape. Them if I wait to long to take it off they sometimes turn yellow. I am sooooooo confused I always thought squash was the same as zucchini, but I guess it is not. Please help first time gardner.

Zuchinni and squash (yellow squash). Zucchini is a squash, but a different variety of squash. Zuchinni will always stay green even if you let it get huge. So if it turns pear shaped and yellow then the chances are that you are growing yellow straight neck or crook neck squash. However, I have seen zucchini that I have left on the plant get gigantic and start to become yellow on once side. Here are some pics for comparison.

Zucchini squash in recent years has overtaken other types of summer squash in popularity as a fresh and cooked vegetable.

Zucchini is represented by several named varieties (cultivars). Fruits of this member of the Italian marrow squashes grow most commonly in cylindrical shapes, but also in round and intermediate shapes. Fruit color varies from a green so dark as to be near black, to lighter shades of green both with and without stripes, all the way to tones of yellow. Many are highlighted with various degrees of speckling.

Zuccini squash is green with yellowish stripes down it, yellow squash is yellow from the begining of growth, now you said yours are pear shaped and green with no lines, is accorn shape a little closer to what you mean? cause if so you got accorn squash it is darker green then zuccini and does,nt remain slender in shape and they sometimes turn yellow if left go to long. Best time to pick them is when there about the size of your hand, my wife stuffs accorn squash with hamburger, rice, onion, and some spices and tops it off with chopped tomato,s and bakes it. Let me tell you it,s good eating! especially if you like stuffed green peppers or cabbage, a few of these and you got a great meal. enjoy!
