Davis is right and wrong. Stanislavski's most noted work with a playwright was with Chechov, whose works he interpreted as comedies instead of tragedies (a moot point in some cases), but with such great success that the symbol of the Moscow Art Theatre was a seagull taken from Chechov's play of that title. He also worked with Gorki and others. What happened to make Davis so bitter was that Lee Strasburg and others from The Group Theatre, an attempt to emulate the Russian Theatre in the 30's, misinterpreted Stanislavski's way of training actors and created a great hoax in acting training called The Method. This hoax is exposed in True and False by David Mamet and in more detail in my book, The Tao of Acting.

He inter-continentally SCREWED an entire literate generation of Actors... he didn't work with any one, I think he worked them over.
