BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Before Boise State running back Ian Johnson married the girl he proposed to on national television, the couple prayed to end prejudice.

Johnson, who is black, has said he received phone calls and about 30 letters, including personal threats from people who objected to his plans to marry his white fiancee. Johnson has not described the threats, and it is unclear where they came from.

Yes, of course, there are people who are against interracial marriages. After all, look at the world news and you'll see that there are still civil wars and ethnic violence. These things do not stop people who marry, have families, and live happily ever after. It should not stop you or Mr. Johnson and his fiancee from marrying. I'm in an interracial marriage being a white American and an adult TCK and having married a South Asian.

As for children and adults who come from multiple language, cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, it is unfair that the USA government forces us to make choices on forms, computer databases, and categories where we are allowed only one choice and/or the choices provided are not accurate enough and/or the labels provided are not congruent with our own wishes for what we would like to call ourselves. A child who is both African and Mexican ancestry should not have to check the Hispanic/Latino box and totally ignore the African side of themselves and a child who is both African and white/Caucasian in ancestry should not have to check the African-American/Black box and totally ignore the very real and intimate white/Caucasian side of themselves. In addition, recent immigrants should be given an option to check off a box that describes themselves as more recent immigrants so that while I'm white/Caucasian with ancestry from Europe, I know I'm not European American when compared to a recent immgrant from Europe. Likewise, I would like to see that all of us, not just Hispanic/Latino, get to check off our ethnicity and that Hispanic/Latino gets to check off specific ethnicity. For example, a person from Sri Lanka might have an ethnicity of Singhalese, yet have options to choose Asian/Pacific Islander or Asian Indian, neither of which really is specific enough to describe the person's culture, racial, and ethnic background.

You are correct in one respect, but you are also wrong in another. The kids do suffer, I don't think suffer is the right word, but they do reap the negativity that ignorant supposed ADULTS put out. That is unfortunate. Much older people who are set in their ways and IGNORANT idiots give the "cold stare", or "nasty looks", or make RUDE comments, the kids hopefully are too young to realize it, then they get older and those who do, do that wonder why "the youth" look at them like they are crap. Why there is little respect for "older" people today. Some is just lack of good upbringing, but the other is that the youth find these ADULTS ridiculous in their thinking...
It is a mind blower that in 2007 there is still "my opinion is right" idiotic prejudice thinking, but we can attribute that to the way those people were brainwashed into thinking "their race" is the best race. That people shouldn't mix, and frankly it's none of anyone's damn business. Perhaps they were not also taught by their mommies, If you don't have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all....To actually have "threats" against someone because of whom they choose to love, just proves we are still behind in the times and IGNORANCE is still abundant!!!! but look at the world today, with the headline news reports, and we are surprised. I'm not!!!!

Yes, there will always be ignorant people, but hopefully over time and as more interracial marriages take place, and people actually "meet" individuals of different nationalities, everyone will become more accepting.
My friend (white) married a black man and her father would not speak to her--until they moved back home to be near her parents, her father met the man, and they get along great now! I guess people form prejudices and that will not stop, but to forbid a couple to get married simply based on skin color is ridiculous and they should mind their own business.

Yes but the odds are changing for the better. Just 40 years ago or so, they took a poll. Only 4 of 10 said they had no problem with interracial marriages. In todays society 8 of 10 have no problem with it. So things are changing for the better. But we are human and there are always going to be stupid people out there with too much time on their hands that they have to focus on what other people are doing.

Nothing should surprise me but I am very surprised and saddened and angered.

Race does not matter. Any sane, educated, intelligent, and smart person knows this to be true.

But race was a problem when I was growing up. I'm 33 now.
I lived in a mostly white community and there was pretty open racism in our small town. It angered me then and it still does now. But attitudes are very hard to change and the same goes for perceptions, values, etc. However, knowledge is easy to change.

There will always be bigots and prejudices out there. The fact that there were so few shows that we have made progress in racial issues. 10 or 15 years ago that number of 30 would have probably been 300 or more.

Yes, there is still ignorance in this world. I know of many interracial married couples in my Church and neighbors.

I say, if you find the love of your life go far it. It is no one else's business.

Its all about being happy, and in this world we live in, we sure could use some happiness.

The children do just fine. Children don't pay attention to this type of idiocy, they are just children that deserve to go up to be happy and to have their place in this big-fat ugly world!

Many could learn a lesson from the little children, they just love each-other no matter who they are, they do not see color, whether, white, black, red or brown.

It is strange considering way before American society people have been mixing since ancient times.
Their are so many mixed people from many different countries not just what their is in the US .Many scientist even say no race is what some like to call"PURE" so people should get over it
Larry is dumb sorry to say he is speaking for all mixed kids ??! get a life google it and you will see how many kids are proud to be mixed and also see how many people you thought were white who are only half ..like AManda marshal ...and she is proud to be mixed and always says that .It is media that prefers not to say anything

In this world, there are and always will be small minded people, no need to try and change them--it's too late. People should marry for love, the color of the skin is only the outer part of a person.

It isn't the relationship that is the problem. It is what is produced. A child of both skins. Blacks won't accept, niether will whites. A child that has no ethnic background. A child that is shunned by both world's. Sure there are people that say that didn't happen to my kid, but guess what, ask the kid how he or she is treated at the playground, school, or workplace. Why put a child through that, all for the sake of sex.
