This may sound counter-productive, but I would say the surest way to control ego is to try to let it grow too big. It seems to burst once it gets to a size that cannot hold its own weight. With that as experience, it never seems to get out of control again. This, however, is the hard way to do things, but it is probably the most useful as well as permenant.
Otherwise, I would say one thing that helps control it is constant awareness of it. If you are asking this question, you are already ahead of the game. Just realize that each individual has something to offer the world. We come in through the same door (the one provided by our mothers), and we all die. It is how we treat people in the time in between that seems to matter most. Ego and arrogance always affect others more harmfully than ourselves. Care for others, and the ego will stay in its rightful place.

keep in mind that having a healthy ego is a good thing, as long as you remember that you "dont build yourself up by putting others down" and "you can be/feel great without needing to feel better than others", you will be fine!
so i am not sure in what way you feel having an ego is a negative thing? its like being self-centered, by centering on yourself and becoming the best you can be, developing yourself, you then have more to offer the world and loved ones, its only when you cant focus on others at all that it becomes a problem
so i would say, grow that ego, feel fantastic about yourself!!

If you frequently compare yourself with those in particular who are superior in terms of talents, skill and knowledge and realise that there will always be someone who would outsmart you, then whatever ego you have will deflate a little bit. Second, have a compassionate attitude towards those who are less fortunate. This will make you humble and your own ego will appear overblown. Self realisation is another aspect that controls the development of ego.

Simple. Look around and see the sufferings of the people . Think about the poverty, deceases and violence in the society. Glance at the terrorists... observe the politicians... look the way they pay for their misdeeds... Ego.. and Power. Naturally your ego vanishes... and one day you will boldly say " Ego... I left long long ago".!

Do not be a part of it, rather accept it and make it a part of yourself.Ego is a swollen sense of identification, covered by layers with that which you "think " you are out of your past....
