What do they have to gain from socialist ideas that others do not?

Who said anything about state colleges, ruth? Liberals dominate the faculty on all college campuses, even religious schools, unless there is a political litmus test to keep them out.

You could take some consolation in the fact that colleges still manage to turn out conservatives.
The thought that unions want the government to pay for everything is so backwards that I am amazed.
What do you think is the point of a union if not to assure living wages and health benefits and safe conditions and reasonable rules for termination. Wanting that is an assurance that union members aren't at the mercy of whatever government is in power or a paternalistic, or maybe not so paternalistic big business. WIthout worker safeguards in place we would all be insured at the whim of the next CEO to take over at your place of business, as several million have already found out. And private health insurance runs almost $1500 a month for a family of four. With co-pays. Can you afford that on your own?

I would take a somewhat educated guess and say that the only reason college professors are liberal is because they have a great deal to gain from socialist ideas. Also they live in a world of theory not reality. Its funny how ideals change once you have to use them and make them practical. Business have always taken the greatest minds anyway, they pay better. So it hurts more people that it helps.

Sorry buddy I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear. Oh by the way, if you talk to Business professors they will be conservative.

EDIT: I'm not sure if your "details" were directed at me but I will offer a response. Social Programs only benefit the working poor and some people in the lower middle class not the majority of the population. You will find many college professors in these categories.

One consequence to higher taxes to pay social programs is a huge amount of investment capital and individual disposable income is removed from the economy. We saw the effect of this at the end of Clinton's Presidency high taxes when the .com bubble burst.

First of all, I do not even agree with this premise. Liberal professors gravitate to certain fields and Conservatives to others.

But, for the sake of argument, assuming Liberals dominate on state campuses, I can only assume they are there for the lifetime job security (which I can assume is a benefit they see from socialism).

Conservatives probably want to make real money.

ADDED: I guess I said state colleges, cutie. I as in me, myself and I. Private colleges do not need to employ a litmus test to keep Liberals out, dear. They simply do not provide the life-time tenure. Life-time tenure is the draw for Liberals, and everyone with any kind of education knows this. LOL

Your statement is not quite accurate. I think many college professors are politically conservatives and intellectually liberal. Yes, there are some crackpots at bad state colleges, but they're a different breed. Probably most professors at good colleges are Independent, but are often labeled liberal anyway just for thinking.

For me there are several.
First and formost would be liberals tend to gravitate towards academia. For the most part, they can't do anything else. They have either failed at other endeavors or they were too timid to try. Conservative college professors tend to become teachers as a secondary career after success elsewhere.
Liberal college professors tend to be life long academics cloistered in a comfy job without much concern for results and/or a need to justify their employment.

As the old adage would remind us:
Those that can....do!
Those that can't...teach!

I really don't buy that BS that most college professors are liberal.

The man that had the most profound effect on my life was definitely NOT a "liberal;" yet I know that he would have had NO use for someone like Dubya.

Many of the professors are conservatives, but they are intellectually liberal, like someone mentioned above. I had several conservative teachers when I was in school.

Most college professors are liberal because they are one big union and we know unions prefer that the government provide everything.
The folks who really learn things in college also learn how to think for themselves and rapidly outgrow their college professors. This is a good thing.

That most of them live off of the public trough. They're typical liberals.

Tenure = Security for life, practically have to commit murder to get rid of them. Nothing more than a union.

Government grants = Many apply for them. They are freebies that we (taxpayers), get zinged for. Some are good, most are a waste of time and money.

Indoctrination = Fortunately, many of us wise up and overlook the extreme left leanings.

Logic 101 quiz completed! I deserve a high score for my honesty. :)

That the ppl in politics and in education are teaching our children the ways of the devil and not the ways of God. God tells us how to act think and live, and its only He we should listen to. They teach this stuff so much from kindergarden on and its no accident. Ever hear of how this is al leading to a one world order, even ol Hillarys book on it takes a village.
if they cant take care of themselves, how will they raise our children. ?????????????????? America needs to wake up. I put mine in christian schools but it was too late. All that pulp pumped into them from the day they begin schools just shapes their mind to where truth wont go in anymore. Today I would only home schools my children. PERIOD. These are the last days folks, America wake up. Ever read about the Bildebergers and such groups . this is not accident, it is all planned . From the teachings of homosexuality, to okeying abortion, removing prayer from schools and the list goes on. If govt would get back to God, it would be an easier place to raise our children in the Lord. But, we still will , those that truly love God, no matter what they preach thru govt and in the schools. God will come and all sin will end and its soon. SO we better deceide , are we Gods or not.?? WE must belong fully to Jesus or we arent His at all, He is coming soon, where do you stand???????????????????
