Meaning instead of all matter being pulled towards the earth if for only 10 exact seconds all matter was repelled from earth, how dramatic would life change on earth. The cars, people, homes, trees, and yes oceans would start to head towards the upper skies only to then be brought back crashing onto earth. I think less than 1% of the population would survive, with calamity everywhere. I had a dream and sadly witnessed all this, and it scared the life out of me. But it did leave me wondering if a passing asteroid or meteor shower could actually affect earths gravity for only 10 seconds to destroy manking like this. All answers would be appreciated. trust me they would

There would be no life to change
We would head upwards too. Who could survive that?
No one.

It won't happen because we're on this planet for a purpose & the universe is finely tuned. There is always speculation about asteroids & meteorites but nothing ever happens

A meteor shower couldn't reverse gravity. Nothing could.

Anything passing by would have the same gravitational pull on the whole of the Earth as it would on someone/something on the surface of the Earth. The only slight deviation from this would be tidal forces (i.e. the people on the side of the earth near what was passing by would feel a slightly stronger pull than the people on the far side). But the moon's tidal effects are noticeable only in their effects on the oceans, so whatever passed by would have to have a stronger tidal force than the moon.

This is enormously unlikely. For the kinds of asteroids that exist in our solar system to do this, they would have to get so close to the Earth that they would be burned up first. And even if there were some heavy object out there that could do this, it would raise the ocean tides by an awful lot first. But again, this is so unlikely that we don't need to worry about it.

If you changed the sign of the force in Newton's equation, the gravitational force would be exactly as strong as it is now, but in the opposite direction. You would accelerate upward at 9.8 m/sec^2. Your own orbital motion of about a thousand miles per hour would cease to be orbital, and you would tangentially move away from earth. The acceleration from the reversed gravity would be on top of that. The earth itself has enough cohesion so it wouldn't break apart noticeably, but the water would go. Trees wouldn't move, but anything that wasn't tied down would go, including cars and even buildings that aren't secured to foundations. If you were inside an undamaged building, you could easily survive an 8-foot drop from the ceiling.

Some would survive the fall from 1500 feet, depending on what they landed on. Some in a car with a seat belt on could survive, especially if the car landed on its wheels or on its back end. Most plants, fish, birds, insects, cats, and very small animals would be fine.

All orbits would be purturbed, so they would be wobbly for a long time, but that likely wouldn't have a serious effect. We would lose track of all satellite orbits, and we'd probably lose some due to collisions.

i think that anything that was not tied down would float to the heavens but things like trees and anything with good roots in the earth would be ok. the oceans would empty but settle back after. its like building a model city and turning it up side down, certain stuff would be glued down and be ok and other stuff i.e cars left to roam would fall off. i suppose if you were in a good building you would be on the ceiling for ten second and have a bump when gravity goes back to normal.

You say you think only 1 % of the population would survive.... there has got to be more than 1% of the population indoors and they would only walk around on the ceiling for a while..and then come outside to world war 3.... Ooohh it sounds like a lot of fun!!

yup dude..10 seconds will be very long for us to survive..
gravitational force is about 10ms-1,right? so, if it is reversed, for 10 seconds,anyone on an open field will be thrown about 500 metres high from the earth before he is forced down to earth again..then,he will hit the ground at 100 metres per second speed..so,i think nothing will survived that kind of energy..

if a meteor had enough of a gravitational pull to reverse gravity on earth it would pull the earth into itself, and if its gravitational pull was that strong no-one would survive that 1% you speak of would perish

Everything would shoot out at the speed of gravity, and certainly would not fall back in the same order.
