It's a conspiracy to take all your money through speeding tickets. You should just forward your tickets to GM, Chrysler, Ford, whatever and say "Look what YOUR car made me do!" Damned criminals.

The reason is pretty simple. If you had a car with an 80 mph. speedometer and it was capable of going 100 the analog speedometer mechanism would be ruined if you exceed 80 mph. If you lived in Germany and drove on the auto-bond where no speed limit exists it's conceivable that you'd either keep up with traffic or choose country scenic roads to drive at a reasonable rate of speed.
If you had forked over $75,000 for a new LS-6 Corvette what type of speedometer would you option for? The dealer would hand you a strip of duck tape to cover most of the speedometer and block of wood and a bolt to install under the accelerator.
A speedometer is an analog speed ingicator good bad or indifferent. Other analog read -outs on good cars are oil pressure, oil temperature, alternator voltage, coolant temperature, fuel level, turbo / supercharger pressure etc.

Because speed limits are different everywhere. The autobahn in Germany has no speed limit in some sections of it. In Montana some of the speed limits are stated as "resonable and safe speed". That could be 100 MPH if your on a huge road with no other cars around for miles. In texas some speed limits are 85. Some places its 75. The speed limit is different everywhere. It's just easier to have a speedometer that goes up to 120 mph.
AS someone said before. It also just makes it seem like you have a faster car. It's like buying a Roush Stage 3 Performance Mustang or buying a Corvette. Your never going to get to use all that speed except rarely at the race track if your lucky enough to have one near you. It just feels better and is more fun having a faster car or making it seem faster.
Ok, lets pretend I have a car that is capable of 110 MPH but my speedometer only goes to 75. Well..say I'm on the highway, my speedometer hits 75 and stops but I could subconsciously accelerate to much higher speeds slow over the course of my driving. Its like my motorcycle, the speedometer stops at 85, but it goes a lot faster so when I'm going over that I cant tell how fast I'm going.(test purposes only, I dont normally drive around like this, way to damn dangerous).

Well I had a job where I was test driving cars for GM on the proving ground.
And I can say that I am glad that they are there, otherwise I would have had to guess - and that can turn ugly real quick.
In other parts of the world there is no speed limit.
And what about the people (like me) that race on Saturday and drive it all week? We want to know that our cars are capable of speed.

Because having a speedo only go as high as the speed limit looks FREAKIN STUPID! Ford did this back in the 80's and it's just dumb!

because they know most people will never push the limit. it makes people think theyve got a faster car than they do.
