Well, let's not go overboard. Bettman was relatively new to the league in 1994 when the previous lockout occurred. Bob Goodenow (the NHLPA director at the time), used hard-line, antagonistic tactics to get the better of Bettman in negotiations. That began the era of runaway player salaries, that forced some teams to move (Quebec, Hartford, Winnipeg), and nearly bankrupt others (Buffalo, Ottawa). Bettman dedicated the time between that lockout and the one in 2004-05 to get revenge and beat Goodenow for the betterment of the league. Clearly, it worked. By preparing for Goodenow's tactics and standing up to him in 2004, not only did he get a CBA in place that saved Buffalo, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, et al., the player's union ran Goodenow out of town. "That" should be Bettman's legacy.
However, the horrible TV deals and the fact that no one could even find the All-Star game on TV this year if they DID want to watch it, will ultimately be his undoing. Bettman has made some mistakes and done some good things as well. But he has run his course and should resign. Look for that announcement soon. If not, ... sack him!

If Bettman does get fired, who then becomes Commissioner. I believe that Bettman is the reason for the lockout a couple of years ago and now allegedly telling who can and can't buy certain franchises like the issue going on in Nashville. If the Predators didn't want to be in Nashville, they would have been placed in a different market.

Should be long gone. Can't blame everything on him, but he should definantly go. The love of the game has been gone for ages. It's now the love of the mighty dollar.
Get someone else in there who'll actually make the NHL about hockey again.

He should be sacked and his names should be wiped clean from the NHL history books. He should be referred to as He Who Shall Not Be Named.

he needs to learn that even though there are lots of NHL teams in the USA, nobody really cares about hockey. if he could just strike a deal with ESPN, then the NHL would be more popular.

Fire the team owners too then. He just does what they tell him. As far as I'm concerned none of them are in the sport for the love of hockey.

I do as well. In my opinion, he is by far the worst of the commissioner in the major sports.
