More likely, the weight gain has to do with the change in diet. Rich American food puts on more fat and muscle than beans and rice with tortillas. And, for a lot of these guys, it's the first time they could afford to really eat.
My dad gained 25 lbs in Air Force basic training, and I'm pretty sure he didn't use steroids. Hardly anyone had heard of them back in the 50's.

Anyone that takes steroids does it to make himself stronger and to have better recuperative powers if he becomes injured. I believe the use of any kind of drug is a personal issue and most players don't inform anyone else of their decision to use them. I also believe, that at this elite level of sports, that every player knows exactly what is being rubbed into and/or ingested into their body. Every player that elects to do these things does it with full knowledge of what he is doing.

I wouldnt think so. Who knows though, maybe it happened, but I wouldnt put my money on it. If they did steriods or anything like that I am sure they knew what they were doing. Sosa was here more than 5 years before he started making waves. That is enough time in my opinion to realized what you are doing.
