Hmm, interesting question. Would lead me to ask other questions - should sports figures stay out of political matters? (they seem to).
Should actors and celebrities stay out of political matters? (unfortunately, they don't).
Maybe people should stick to their areas of knowledge (like politics) and keep their opinions to themselves on topics they know nothing about (like sports).

The correct answer probably is "not entirely." For starters, cities and states have a role in the construction of stadiums and arena, and politicians have to be involved in that process. There are a variety of anti-trust issues that come up in pro sports, such as the reserve clause and television blackouts.
Plus, there are certain health precautions that are necessary. States have done some things with boxing in that way, and they probably should do more.
And this doesn't consider actions like Congress' hearing on steroids in baseball, which was a huge watershed in that issue.
So like it or not, government will be involved in sports. I can do without the posturing and grandstanding, but it's part of the process sadly.

Yes. We have much more pressing issues in this country than who "cheated" in some game. So far, the government hasn't really shown that its very good at taking care of the country's MAJOR problems (unemployment, homelessness, war). Why do they think that they are going to be able to fix sports?

Unless they`re passing some new legislation dealing with gambling or racketeering, they should stay the hell out of sports. They can`t seem to resist the urge to convene some type of self aggrandizing comittee in order to get their faces on t.v.

I think so because look at how politicians mess up politics & other matters. We don't need them screwing up sports.
