Firstly I live in Australia so I don't get to watch or see anything to do with NFL. I was wondering what NFL stands for, what are the rules, what are the tactics the players use, who are the best players/best teams etc. Who do you go for and why?
Thanks

NFL - national football league

team with higher more points at end wins...

ways to score

touchdown (TD) - 6pts, you get to attempt an extra point (XP) kick after a TD for 1 pt, so unless the XP fails a TD is usually 7pts

2pt conversion, if teams want to/need to get some extra points, after they score a TD instead of the XP they can run a play near the goalline, if the play succeeds and they legally get in the endzone (which is how a touchdown is scored) they get 2pts (and 8pts overall for TD + 2pt conversion), if not, just the 6 TD pts)

field goal (FG) if you have ever seen a football game on TV you'd notice a yellow line superimposed on the field, this is the down marker. teams have 4 chances to get the ball to or pass this marker to keep their possession and try to score other wise they'll turn the ball over to the other team... if they turn the ball over too far from the opposing endzone, then they kick the ball back to the other team; however if their drive brings them close enough to the opponent endzone, they can attempt to kick the ball through the uprights (which is what they do for the XP btw)... if they succeed they get 3pts

about tactics, on the field the offensive team has a quarterback (QB) who leads the offense and can throw the back to either a wide receiver (WR) or tight end (TE) to catch, or hand the ball to a running back (RB) to run... the other offensive guys try to form a protective barrier around the QB to give him time to make a decision or create a "hole" for the running back to get some space to run

as far as teams go, i think as in most team sports most fans come from the city/region the team represents and therefore its mostly a matter of civic pride.... however if a certain team is very good or has charismatic players (e.g. the bulls and michael jordan in basketball) then you probably get a lot of non-resident support for that team...

as far as best teams, football of all the major US sports has the most parity in that a very bad team one year can become very good the next year and vice versa, and because there are so few games (16) in the season, every game counts, so even a matchup with a supposedly superior team against a weak team won't necessarily turn up as expected...

however the most consistently GOOD teams of the past few seasons (and their best players) would be
Indianapolis colts (peyton manning, QB) - just won the last title
new england patriots (tom brady, QB) - won 3 of the last 7 titles
san diego chargers (ladanian tomlinson, RB) - exciting offensive team and consistently one of the top 5-10 teams in the league

how this helps....

Well the NFL stands for National Football League. There are alot of rules. but go to my source to read up the rules. the tactics of the game are to score more points than the other team. the offense uses many formations such as the "I" formation, broken "I", shotgun, and goaline formations. the defense uses many formations also such as the 4-3 where there are 4 defensive linemen and 3 linebackers, or the 3-4 which is 3 Dlinemen and 4 Linebackers. also there are MANY great players. My favorite team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. they are just so amazing, although the New England Patriots, San Diego Chargers, Chicago Bears, and Indianapolis Colts are also really good. The best player however is on the San Diego Chargers, goes by LT, thats Ladanien Tomlinson. Also Peyton Manning(colts), Tom Brady(Patriots), Hines Ward(steelers), Randy Moss(Patriots), Larry Johnson(Kansas City Chiefs) are also really good. i am not sure what "who do u go for" is about but if it means who is my favorite team, my favorite team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. they are so "blue collar" its awesome. not to mention they ave only had three head coaches since 1969. talk about job stability. but if it means who you are trying to tackle its the person with the ball to stop them from crossing the goaline.

hoep this helps in any way

You have the Sydney Lions in your backyard.
One of their DBs is on my 360 page "Count Nightmare".

National Football League.

Every player uses different "tactics".

Simple game. Two teams of 11 men.
One is offense. One is defense.

Offense has for tries (called "downs") to move the ball 10 yards (about 9 meters) by either tossing or running the ball.
If they fail - the other team gets to play offense and do the same.

If they succeed; wherever the ball is "blown dead". The referees whistles indicates the ball is dead. From this point...4 more tries and 10 more yards.

If the Offense can't make it...on the 4th try, they can kick the ball to the Defense. Wherever the Defense can get the ball, is where they have to start their Offensive attempt.

Best players and teams is a big list.

I'm a 49er fan because I was born and raised in that area.
"most" people cheer for their "home" team.

NFL stands for National Football League. The rules are too complex to list here, so I'll refer you to this website:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football

The NFL has 32 teams, all within the United States. The current NFL champion is the Indianapolis Colts. My personal favorite team is the St. Louis Rams. To find out more about the NFL, go to www.nfl.com.

It would take several pages to answer all those questions. National Football League. You might be able to get some of the answers at www.nfl.com and by looking up American Football on wikipedia. The Indianapolis Colts won the SuperBowl last year, so I guess they are the best team right now. There are two conferences AFC and NFC. The AFC right now is the better conference. My personal favorite team is the Cincinnati Bengals.

nfl = national football league

the rules are in the link below. compared to the afl, there's 11 men per team on the field, you can substitute in any number of players (so players will exclusively play offense or defense as the entire team gets subbed after a change of possession), and play stops every time someone gets tackled or when the ball goes out of bounds of the rectangular field. hence, players are always lining up for the next play and much of tactics surrounds keeping the defense honest by threatening to take the set play one direction or another, so they can't be leaning to go one way. the goal is to be in possession of the ball and run it into the opponent's side of the field (called a touchdown), and you can score less points by having someone kick it through goalposts (there's two of them, compared to the four in the afl).

examples of great teams and star players include the indianapolis colts (current champs, led by peyton manning), the new england patriots (have won three recent championships, led by tom brady), the san diego chargers (a favorite for this year, led by ladainian tomlinson), and the chicago bears (made it to the championship game last year, led by brian urlacher). the first three stars I mentioned all play offense and most stars play offense.

NFL---National football League.

Tactics--- each team thinks of this:

(1.) Score, baby, score without committing penalties!
(2.) Stop the other team from scoring, while not committing penalties!

Go to NFL.com to find out answers to everything you could possibly want to know about the NFL, including players and good teams. And as far as good teams go, the Oakland Raiders definitely are not one of them.
