What kind of problems can pop up?

First, it does not have to be unplugged to lose data. Save often, save well, jesus saves, so should you, etc ad-infinatum ad nauseum.

That having been said, If the laptop is turned off then then when you come back it will be fine.

If you leave it on and unplugged it will eventually power itself down (the battery can only last so long). If you have it configured correctly it will go into "suspend" or "Sleep" where it stores everything waiting to be plugged back in.

A computer is like a tape recorder. You can only get back what you put on (Saved!).

Luck!

Well if you disconnect your laptop from all power sources you wont be able to use it, that is a problem. No you wont lose data, your drive will not lose any data just because the laptop doesn't have any power.

Just don't go running a super magnet up against it.

When you say all power do you mean the cosmos battery as well because you could loose big time then, but as a general rule your data is stored on the hard drive so as long as you are just removing the battery and unplugging the mains
you have nothing to fear.
If you go poking around inside the the computer you will do untold damage from static electricity unless you take the proper precautions.

Ok, I don't think he is talking about permanent data in the hard disk, because it's really common sense. Laptops have the option of hibernating [you don't really need to save your stuff when you switch on that mode because it automatically saves it until you turn you laptop back on again]. If that was your question, then I'm not sure how long until that data is removed, I'd like to see an answer to that as well.

P.S. I'm sure someone will come up with answers such as: why don't you actually save your stuff before you switch on hibernating? Well, what if it's a movie that I paused before hibernating, there's no way to actually save it after pausing it and that's where hibernating kicks in.

And leave it turned on? If so, then may - only if you have an active program up and you're working on something...you'll loose whatever you may have been working on in an active program. For instance, if you were working on a Word document, you'll probably loose that.

But, leaving it unplugged from all power sources and turned off, the answer is no. All data is stored on your disk drive, not memory.

You won't lose any data. When you reconnect, you'll have to charge the battery before using the laptop without plugging it in.

No problems at all.

Your data is on the hard drive, stored there quite permanently barring any major mishaps.

No, in the same way CD's and DVD's don't lose data when they're not in use. Don't panic nothing will happen to your data.
