256 bit colour is gone from windows 98? How do I fix it?

for some reason the only colour choices my Son has is 2 & 16 bit. 256 is gone? Is there any way to restore this? I don't have a 98 disc.

Reinstall the video drivers. Standard answer. You will need to know what video card you have, of course.

And it's 256-color (8-bit), 16-color (4-bit), and so on.

You ALWAYS need the O/S disk (i.e. Win98 disk in this case) in addition to all the other ones. ALWAYS ALWAYS keep one around.
