No, the band was made for the film. Andrew Strong was the lead singer, and you'd never believe, with a voice like he had, that he was only 16 at the time. His father was working on the film and he just decided to turn up for auditions and got the part. The band from the film did some touring afterwards, I know they did Butlins. The band that tours now has, I think, only one member of the band featured on the film, that's the drummer.

The film was an adapted from a book of the same name by Roddy Doyle. So the band were put together for the film. The cast were mostly unknown before filming, and were mainly chosen on the strength of their musical, rather than acting, ability.

The band was real.. Not sure if they made the movie because of the band or vica versa. But i can tell you, that after the movie - the band did a national US concert tour, and they put out several albums on cd.

I wondered that as I heard they're performing at a concert near me in August.
