rusting is a characteristic of iron. oxygen and water is require for rusting to happen

Metal needs two things to rust: oxygen and moisture (water or water vapour in the atmosphere). Rust on iron is a mixture of various iron hydroxides, not just iron oxide.

If you emerge certain metals in water for very long periods of time they will eventually rust when they are exposed to the air again you will notice the rust.

rust is Iron Oxide , Fi03. You need Iron and Oxygen.

If you wanted to speed the process up you need to increace the surface area through abrasion or corrosion.....Salt water seems to do horrible things to unprotected trailers..maybe try that.
