Selfishness is a trait of helpless babies. They find that if they emit bloodcurdling screams they will survive by being fed. The baby cares not for the feelings of others. It is selfcentered. If this trait is not suppressed by conscientious loving parents, the little baby will grow up to be a big baby. Only, as a big baby, it gains strength and power. Suppressing ones selfishness and caring for the needs and good of others is one of the duties of loving parents to 'socialize' their babies. Some parents cater to and 'spoil' their babies by not performing this 'service' to their child and the rest of society. Falling in love and having their own babies will often cure the selfishness of many people.

Human Nature.

It is human nature to be concerned for one's self.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, when properly put to use. In the writings of Ayn Rand, there are values in selfishness.
If I care about myself and put my happiness first and foremost, then there is nothing wrong with that, so long as I do not intentionally hurt others by doing so.

Are you asking why are people selfish, or why are people selfless? Note that those are adjectives. Selfishness is a noun.

it is a natural thing we are born with.

it has to do with our instinct of self preservation. to keep ourselfs alive. this instinct caries over into looking out for number one in areas that are not dealing with life or death.

we as humans can sometimes overide those insticts and do something good for other people that has no benifit to ourself.
