Because society has taught us to care about what others think...Also as kids we always needed approval to do things right? Our parents dressed us and told us what to wear and cheered us on when we did things correctly setting us up for the need for approval from others. We need everyone's opinion to feel good about ourselves. I'm REALLY working on not worrying about what others say because I am the most important person and only God can judge me....It's hared for me to not worry about what others think because I've done it for so long but I am trying! Great question! =D

Most of us conduct ourselves in the way that portrays us. We are real. The way I act, write, ask and answer questions is the real me. So of course it would bother me what people think of me. It is personal. I want family, friends, co-workers, church members and other people whom I respect to think well of me.
Now on an anonymous site like this, it does not really matter to me what a complete stranger thinks of me. It does bother me if people are nasty for no reason, because that reflects the decline of human nature.

Everyone wants to be accepted in one way or another, I think. Some people are afraid of being looked down upon, others just want to be popular...I think most of us just want to at least be understood.

They're afraid they aren't good enough. I really don't care what other people think or say...they won't change me.

It is how we are brought up by our parents. If they do care about it, it is most probable that we care about it too.
The culture and ethics of a country is of importance too.
