I think that intimacy is a deep level of honesty and compassion between two people. For me, intimacy is opening up and allowing someone else to see your secrets and your weaknesses, and also seeing someone else's. I add compassion, also, because even after you've seen many sides of other people, you have to learn to understand them, to empathize with where a person might be coming from even when they aren't at their best, or when you see the both flawed and perfect soul and inner core of the person you love. I sat flawed and perfect, because to me, some of the most perfect things are actually flawed in some way that makes them unique, and thus... more perfect.
When I think of intimacy, and what it's truly like, I think of my best friend 10 years after marrying her husband. Even though they dated for three years, she remarked to me that, when they were married, she barely knew him. After 10 years, she knew him so much better, and loved him that much more. I think that's an example of what intimacy is like, and morever, intimacy is infinite, as people continue to age, grow and change, there is always more to know and more to share.

Intimacy is a shared sacred space where what you share is trusted and valued. The quirks, flaws, giftedness of your personality are glorious to the other - you're keying into the depths of one another's souls. You're more "at home" with that person than you are anywhere else. Your vulnerable self has a safe place where it can unfold and develop. Thoughts and experiences you would never consider sharing with anyone else are easily shared. The most important aspect of intimacy is that that other person completes you in a way that dispels all loneliness.

Intimacy is the sharing of one's own self--be it physical, emotional, spiritual, and/or intellectual--with another person in such a way that both people simultaneously become vulnerable to each other.

For me what comes out in my mind when you say intimacy it is closeness and having confidential friendship or maybe an intimate act with your partner especially in an illicit sexual connection.
