I've heard of the water trick. It's an old mechanics trick where they would start the car and while it idled they would S-L-O-W-L-Y trickle water into the carburetor. After reading about this I asked some old timers in a car forum I used to go to and they did indeed confirm that people used to do this and it would clean out carbon deposit BUT this is a very dangerous way to do it. Also notice I said they would pour the water down the carburetor.... now if you've got something modern and fuel injected you can forget about even trying it. I'd recommend you forget about trying it because you can damage your engine.

for carbon buildup, just pick up a can of sea foam from your local napa, take the vacuum line from the brake booster and suck a little bit at a time into the engine... thatll break up any carbon in the engine and send it out the exhaust. suck half the can through and then throw the other half in the gas tank- works great for injector cleaner too :)
