Could anyone please tell me how the worlds seas and oceans came to be named as they are ?....apart from the obvious geographical names such as arctic ocean etc....many thanks in advance for your answers....paul

They may be named after their discoverers (e.g. Magellan Strait) or places where they are located (e.g. South China Sea), or the qualities it possess (like the Dead Sea, where no marine life occurs because of its high salt content).

They were named by explorers after the places (land) they bordered or for some specific trait.

The Indian Ocean is named after India. The Pacific Ocean was so named by Magellan when he discovered it and was amazed by the relative calmness of the ocean with respect to the Atlantic.

this comes from the explorers hundreds of years ago. Areas will have been named by those who "discovered" them, or by the impression they gave, such as Dead Sea, nothing lives in it, The black sea, is very deep and appears to be black etc!

The same quesiton could be asked about all things, such as the words we use right now. Where did they come from in the beginning and how strange they are when you think about it.
