Probably, in fact, in cultures where women were unable to take care of themselves, this was a common practice. In marriage, the wife becomes a responsibility of the husband's family, if the husband dies, his family still must take care of her.

Some historical cultures that did not veiw women as capable individuals, but more like needy dependants is where much of the seemingly misogynistic ideas in the bible came from. In those cultures, these ideas were good and not misogynsitic, but responsible, because our culture is so drastically different and women are no longer veiwed as the 'weaker sex' and can sucessfully take care of themselves, these types of biblical ideas can not apply.

One cannot take the bible at face value, it cannot be applied universally. It's just ignorant to do this, think fundamentalists ruining America. Never take literature outside of it's cultural context.

sure, don't you watch Jerry Springer?

Actually, it was done all the time in the Biblical days. This was to ensure the land and property remained in the family.

Don't see why not. No blood line there. Or did you hope to get a religious argument going?..
