i know that hexane is non-polar however i am having trouble finding information on its uses as a solvent. I am also wondering how reliable the old adage "like dissolves like" is in relation to polar and non-polar substances and if there is a better adage?

Very reliable. Actually the statement should be read as, polar substances dissolve polar substances more easily than others.
