What language do you expect an Australian to speak?
They speak English (known as Australian English), which has it's roots in British English. Much of it originating back to the Gold Rushes of the 1850's or so when the influx of British (cockney) had the greatest effect on the language.

The American influence on Australian English also dates back to the Gold Rush times when many Americans entered the country seeking gold.

I'm not Australian but an American and this is what I know about the Australian language and dialect...anyone from down under feel free to correct me if I gave any misinformation.

Churchill once said the Americans and British were two nations divided by a common language.

Inasmuch as his father was a British Lord and his mother an American he would probably have known this very well. It is possible the Australians might be a third nation added to the divide.
