Back on Win98, I used to go to control panel. With XP, that does NOT work. How do I add/remove programs that launch when my winXP is booted up? Thank you.

Go To Start->Run, and type msconfig in the run box. Go the the startup tab, and uncheck the ones you don't want (be careful not to uncheck ones that you do want there, though).

:)

Start > Run type in msconfig and press OK
Click on STARTUP TAB and you'll see a list.

In here you will see a list of programs that start up when windows does.

But before you do that...........
I would suggest looking down by your clock (lower right hand corner) and either RIGHT clicking on each one and then choose either PRPERTIES or SETTINGS or CONFIGURATION (or something of that sort, which ever program it is and what they call it) then see if you see something like "Start when windows starts" and uncheck it/them.

Reboot and see what happens.

In the start menu, go to the "run" program. In the box type,"msconfig". A box will come up click the tab that says "start-up". This will give you a list of all the programs that run at startup. You can go to Processlibrary.com to find out what each process is. This really cuts down on start up time.

Start > All Programs > Startup

Drag whatever programs you want to boot up into this folder.

The filepath should be:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

To remove programs from startup list, you may use System Configuration Utility (Start -> Run -> msconfig.exe).

However, to add a program to startup list, you need to edit registry. There are two different keys for "current user" and "all users". If you want to run the program when you use your computer, go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and if you want to run the program when any user logged in, go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

Please backup your registry first.

In layman's term, try going Start>All programmes>Startup.

Remove all the programmes you don't need.

If it is preinstalled, follow the steps above.
