Labyrinth is an ancient Minoan word; a labyrinth was a kind of maze built for religious purposes. People were sent to wander in it, sometimes in the dark; and if they reached the center they were shown something like a golden ear of wheat, symbolizing the mysterious power by which growth could take in place in the universe--such as their believing in religion so the men who built the maze should be treated as god-kings and give them orders. The one in Crete at Knossos was built underground.
