None at all. Hitler was going to keep pushing until war broke out, and Russia realized this far earlier than Britain and France. Their Foreign Minister Maxim Litinov spent years trying to form an anti-Hitler alliance, starting as early as 1935. Even after the Munich conference, he tried one last time to get Britain and France to join the Soviet Union in an alliance only to be turned down again. Stalin then fired Litinov (who, being Jewish, was a clear barrier to any treaty with Germany) and instructed his new Foreign Minister to start back channel diplomacy with the Germans which eventually led to the Hitler-Stalin pact.

Russia was responsible by allying itself with the Germans in the 1939 Russo-German pact that paved the way for Hitler's invasion of Poland. Hitler and Stalin agreed to partition Poland between them, in effect, wiping it off the map. Hitler wouldn't have dared invade Poland if Russia hadn't been on his side, so to that extent, they're responsible for the outbreak of World War 2, because it was the invasion of Poland that set the whole thing off, just as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand touched off World War 1!

I don't consider Russia having much responsibility for the outbreak of WW2. Hitler wanted war, and wither it started in 1939 or 1945 it didn't matter to him. in fact the only ones who didn't see it coming were those who thought peace could be maintained though diplomacy. WW2 is a perfect example where diplomacy didn't work, talking didn't work. The only way this war could have been avoided would have been to kill Hitler before war started.

Stalin made a secret pact with Hitler to divide Poland between them. Germany invaded Poland, followed by Russia; and France and Britian declared war on Germany. In a way, if Hitler had not had this secret pact with Stalin, he may have chosen a different strategy to expand Germany. Hitler knew he could not win a war with Germany fighting on two fronts at the same time.

It is possible that if the Soviet Union had not formed a defensive pact with Germany, or if it had recognized Hitler's intentions sooner, the war might have begun or ended at a different time with different casualties, but the invasion of the Soviet Union was a firm and unchanging goal of Hitler's. He was going to do it, foolish as it was, no matter what.

You can read all the answers about the German-Russian Treaty of 1939, blame everything on the Jews, speak to the appeasement of Hitler in 1936 and then again in 1939, but, the true answer to your question is that the Nazi Party in Germany, Adolph Hitler, and all his major associates, were, and solely will be forever, responsible of WWII.

The Nazis/Soviet Pact surprised the world as the world's two bitterest enemies made a secret agreement to divide up Poland. Without the Pact, Hitler may not have invaded Poland.

Great Question, but the Russians were not responsible for WWII at all, However the Germans did feel that they were provoked in WWI when the Russians mobilized troops to prepare for the inevitable war.

To expand on others' answers, Hitler got greedy and tried to defeat Russia. He did not listen to his advisers, and Germans attacked at a terrible time: winter. This was a bad move, as the battle took place on Russian terf. The Russian army was, of course, at an advantage, being that this was their terf and they knew how to maneuver under extremely cold climate, whereas the Germans were not used to the devastating cold. The Russians' defeat over the Germans was a huge blow to Hitler's army. His army suffered a great loss of lives, and Germany's fortress was weakened. Hitler resorted to recruiting children for his armies. Of course, this would prove to be ineffective for obvious reasons, and also b/c Hitler really had no time to be training armies in the middle of a war. This weakening of the German army left that country vulnerable, and this is when the U.S. and its Allies moved in....
The rest is history.
