Different customers respond favorably to different things, and learning how to tell what a given potential customer values is a skill you just have to learn by practice. But there are some general ground rules you can follow to get things started.

First off, be accommodating and pleasant. If you can convey the impression that you actually care about the consumer and aren't just trying to make a sale, then you're more likely to get a repeat customer. For that reason, it can be to your advantage to promote something that's a little less profitable for you but a little more practical for the consumer - repeat customers always pay off in the long run.

Don't be afraid to say that you don't know something. It's best to be knowledgeable about your product, but in the event you really don't know the answer to a certain question, the customer will almost always be able to tell that you're just "winging it" or making up answers. That's a big turn-off and you're much more likely to lose the sale. We're all only human and can only know so much, and people understand that. If you don't know the answer but the customer sees that you're ready, willing and able to find it for them, your willingness to be helpful and informative will far outweigh your lack of knowledge for most of them.

Don't be pushy or aggressive. Show your wares, listen to the customer's needs and try to relate how your wares can fulfill those needs. Ask the customer at several points along the attempted sale if they have any questions or concerns on "this or that thing" (whatsoever that may be). People like being given the chance to respond, especially if they actually _do_ have a question or comment to make.

A big plus is if your customer happens to have some noticeable handicap or deformity, you get extra kudos if you speak about it plainly if it happens to be relevant to the product you're trying to sell. For instance, "There's plenty of room in the back of the van for your wheelchair to fit," or "the alarm also blinks when activated so if you can't hear it, you'll still know it's going on". If it happens to be irrelevant to what you're trying to sell, then treat the subject as the situation seems to demand - some people don't like to talk about it, others like to normalize it by talking about it openly and even joking about it. Generally, if they or those accompanying them make no mention of it, then you should make no mention of it, either - but if they're talking about it and cracking jokes, etc... - then you should talk about it, too - you probably don't want to join them in cracking jokes, however, as there are many risky areas one might accidentally venture into. But you do want to laugh with them when they make their -own- jokes.

The socratic method is the salesmens tool. An unarming advance statement, a sweeping statement, and a positive yes question. for example" Whatever you decide is perfectly alright with me, and i wouldnt want you to take this product unless you could see it was perfect one for you, but would you like a produvt that is both good for you and saves you money? ... yup!

i work in a retail store, and allthough i dont work as a salesperson, i do know what people think makes for a good salesman

1) know your stuff. its kind of a given, but youd be surprised how that gets ignored.
2) dont push. if a customer doesnt want something than dont sell it to them. if they dont need or want your help than dont ask a second time.
3)only sell what the customer needs (or thinks they need). for instance, if your selling laptops: sell the laptop, and also try to sell a carrying case or a wireless mouse.
4)dont try to be a salesman. the more that it appears that you are genuinly trying to help them, rather than get more money from them, the more they will appreciate your time and help, and the more likely they will come back to your store
5)speak with confidence. this goes along with number 1. know your stuff and make sure the customer knows that you know everything about your product.

I think the most important virtue in salesmanship is personality. To tell the truth, I have even bought things I didn't need or want because I liked the salesman. If you establish a rapport with the customer, you might find there are idiots like me and sell your product.

Be honest. So don't try and sell a product you think is stupid, doesn't work, or is generaly off-putting. It will show up in your voice. Thats why bad sales people always sound too happy. Their trying to coverup how they personally feel about their product. Sell something that you yourself would buy. Even better, buy one so you really know how it is. If you work in a store where you obviously can't buy one of everything, specialize in one area, like refigerators, and ask your manager to let you help coustomers looking in that specific area.

Let the customer come to you (especially in car sales)... I hate going into a car dealership and have the locusts descend upon me like the great plague. To us, that shows pure desperation.

If you don't jump on the first person through the door, they are more likely to come to you. Or, give them time to look around... watch their non-verbal language; you'll be able to tell when they're ready for a salesman.

Never be pushy... that's puts up the walls faster than anything.

No pushiness.... If the product you are selling is good, you will make sales. Good customer service skillls.
Also - if someone is looking to buy - they usually set foot onto a car lot, furniture store ect... Find out what the customer is interested in and assist them with no bull**** to find the best product for them and their needs. If you can do this they will return.

know your product, like and believe in your product,be honest with your buyer and connect with them on somewhat of a personal level. you want to show that you are REAL so they will trust.
